# What is 2Chip and how does eSIM work?

> A quick introduction to eSIM, 2Chip, and the steps to get connected for a trip.

2Chip helps you buy an eSIM plan for mobile data while traveling.

You choose a plan for your route, pay for it, install the eSIM profile on your phone, and connect according to that plan’s rules.

**eSIM** is a digital SIM profile. There is no plastic card to insert — the profile is added through your phone settings.

## eSIM vs a physical SIM

| Physical SIM | eSIM |
| - | - |
| Plastic card | Digital profile |
| Inserted into a SIM slot | Added in phone settings |
| Move the card to change phones | Reinstallation and transfer depend on the specific eSIM and device |
| One or more physical slots | A compatible phone can store multiple eSIM profiles |

<Info>
  The eSIM profile itself is only the way your phone connects. Data allowance, validity, coverage, and when the plan starts depend on the plan you buy.
</Info>

  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect during your trip">
    When you need mobile data, enable the eSIM and the settings required for that plan.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Can I keep my regular SIM?

Yes, if your phone supports multiple lines.

For example, you can keep your home number on your regular SIM and use 2Chip for mobile data. What works at the same time depends on your phone and your home carrier.
