Before you fall in love with a plan, take 60 seconds to confirm your device is eSIM-ready — it’ll save you a headache later. Most modern smartphones launched after 2018 support eSIM, but there are a few exceptions worth knowing about. This page walks you through what to look for on iPhones, Android devices, and beyond.

Is Your Device Compatible?

Apple was an early champion of eSIM technology, so most recent iPhones are good to go. Here’s a quick reference:eSIM-compatible iPhone models:
  • iPhone XS and XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 series (Mini, standard, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone 13 series (Mini, standard, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone 14 series (standard, Plus, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone 15 series (standard, Plus, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
iPhone 14 models sold in the United States are eSIM-only — they don’t have a physical SIM tray at all. If you have one of these, you’re already living in the future. 🎉
Quick tip: To confirm eSIM support on your iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and scroll down. If you see an Available SIM or eSIM section, you’re all set.

A Word of Caution About Carrier-Locked Devices

Even if your phone model normally supports eSIM, a carrier-locked device may block you from installing a third-party eSIM like eBanano. This is common with phones purchased directly from a carrier on a contract. Contact your carrier to check your lock status — or use your device’s Settings to see if unlocking is available.

How to Check If Your Device Is eSIM-Ready

Not sure where to look? Follow these steps:
1

Open your phone's Settings

On iPhone, tap the Settings app. On Android, tap Settings — it may look like a gear icon in your app drawer or notification shade.
2

Navigate to SIM or Network settings

On iPhone: go to Settings → General → About and look for “Available SIM” near the bottom of the list.On Android: go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Google Pixel and others). Look for an “Add eSIM” or “Download SIM” option.
3

Look for eSIM or Add eSIM options

If you see an option to Add eSIM, Download a SIM, or similar wording — congratulations, your device is eSIM-ready! If you don’t see any such option, your device may not support eSIM, or it may be carrier-locked.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few things could be going on. First, check whether your device is carrier-locked (see the warning above). Second, make sure you haven’t already reached your device’s eSIM storage limit — some phones cap the number of stored eSIM profiles. Finally, double-check that you scanned the QR code correctly and that your phone’s software is up to date. If you’re still stuck, our support team is happy to help.
Possibly! Some tablets (like newer iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab models) do support eSIM. However, eBanano is designed and optimised for smartphones, so we can’t officially guarantee compatibility on tablets. A handy workaround: install eBanano on your phone and use the mobile hotspot feature to share the connection with your tablet.
When you buy a phone directly from a carrier — especially on a contract or instalment plan — the carrier sometimes “locks” the device so it only works with their network. This can prevent you from adding third-party eSIMs. Once your contract is fulfilled (or sometimes for a fee), you can usually request an unlock. Contact your carrier to find out your device’s lock status and how to unlock it.
