Before you conclude that your device just won’t work with eBanano, it’s worth checking a few things — because the word “incompatible” covers a surprisingly wide range of situations, and many of them are completely fixable. Carrier Lock Issues

What is a carrier lock?

When you buy a phone through a carrier on a contract or installment plan, they often “lock” it so it only works with their own network. This means it’ll accept their SIM cards just fine — but may flat-out refuse to install an eSIM profile from anyone else, including eBanano.

How to check if your phone is locked

  1. Go to Settings → General → About.
  2. Scroll down to Carrier Lock or SIM Lock.
  3. If it says “No SIM restrictions” — great, you’re unlocked!
  4. If it says something like “[Carrier Name] SIM” — your phone is locked and you’ll need to request an unlock before using eBanano.
Alternatively, you can insert a SIM card from a different carrier. If it works, your phone is unlocked. If you get an error, it’s locked.

How to unlock your phone

Contact your current carrier directly — by phone, in-store, or via their website — and ask them to unlock your device. You’ll typically need to:
  • Confirm you own the device outright (or that your contract is complete)
  • Provide your phone’s IMEI number (dial *#06# to find it)
  • Wait a short processing period (usually 24–72 hours)
Most carriers are legally or contractually required to unlock your device once eligibility criteria are met, so don’t be shy about asking.
If your phone is carrier-locked, eBanano’s eSIM will not install until you successfully request an unlock from your carrier. There is no workaround on eBanano’s end — the restriction lives on your device. Once unlocked, eSIM installation will work normally.

Firmware / Software Version Issues

Make sure your phone is running the latest available OS version before installing your eSIM. eSIM support can be tied to specific software versions, and an outdated OS sometimes causes compatibility errors that a simple update will fix.
Updating your phone before you travel (while on home Wi-Fi) is always a good habit — it avoids unexpected issues and usually takes just a few minutes.
  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and make sure your battery is above 50% (or plug in).
  2. Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
  3. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
  4. Once the update completes, try your eSIM installation again.

Regional eSIM Restrictions

Some devices have eSIM-related restrictions depending on where they were originally purchased. Here are the most common questions we hear:
iPhones sold in mainland China (models ending in CH/A or sold through Chinese carriers) do not support eSIM in many configurations — China’s regulations historically required phones sold there to use only physical SIM cards. This applies to older models in particular (iPhone XS through iPhone 13 era).If your iPhone was purchased in mainland China, check your model number: go to Settings → General → About → Model Number. Compare it against Apple’s official specifications to confirm eSIM support for your specific variant. Unfortunately, if your model doesn’t support eSIM, this can’t be changed through software — you’d need a device that does support it.Hong Kong and Macau models (ending in ZA/A) may have different rules — check Apple’s specs for your specific model.
For most US-purchased iPhones (iPhone XS through iPhone 13), eSIM works fine internationally with providers like eBanano.However, iPhone 14 models sold in the United States are a special case: they ship with eSIM-only (no physical SIM tray) and were initially configured for US carriers. While Apple has updated these models to support international eSIM plans, some users have reported needing to update to the latest iOS version to enable full international eSIM compatibility.If you have a US iPhone 14 and are having trouble, make sure you’re on the latest iOS version and try again.
